REPORT ON THE INTERNATIONAL TRAINING                                                     “MODERN TRENDS IN SURGICAL TREATMENTS OF HERNIAS”

1. Introduction

In accordance with the long-standing cooperation agreement between the Second State Central Hospital and the Hernia International Organization, the international on-site training titled “Modern Trends in Surgical Treatment of Hernias” was successfully organized for the 12th consecutive year. The training took place from May 26–31, 2025 at Darkhan-Uul Provincial General Hospital, and from June 2–7, 2025 at the Second State Central Hospital.

2. Participants

3. Training Attendance

A total of 92 participants — surgeons, residents, trainee doctors and nurses — attended the program. Participants represented public and private healthcare organizations from:

Darkhan-Uul, Orkhon, Govisümber provinces, and Sükhbaatar, Nalaikh, Baganuur, Bayanzurkh, Chingeltei, Songinokhairkhan districts.

4. Training Content and Academic Activities

In addition to the practical workplace-based sessions, theoretical lectures were conducted during and after surgeries in classroom format. Participants received detailed explanations and responses to their questions from the surgical instructors.

During this period, Dr. Hairul Anuar Ahmad also visited the Mongolia–Japan Hospital of the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences, where discussions were held regarding potential future collaboration.

A particular highlight of this year’s training was the introduction and application of the self-gripping mesh, which enables automatic fixation to the abdominal wall without additional suturing.

5. Surgical Procedures Performed

Darkhan-Uul Provincial General Hospital

           •         Total surgeries performed: 21

           •         11 open surgeries

           •         10 laparoscopic abdominal surgeries

           •         3 pediatric hernia surgeries

Second State Central Hospital

           •         Total surgeries performed: 21

           •         16 open surgeries

           •         5 laparoscopic abdominal surgeries

6. Conclusion

The program successfully strengthened the clinical experience and theoretical knowledge of Mongolian surgeons and healthcare professionals in advanced hernia treatment methods. The ongoing cooperation with the International Hernia Foundation continues to play a vital role in surgical capacity building, international partnership development, and the adoption of modern hernia repair technologies in Mongolia.
