  • Temporary medical registration is coordinated by the host hospital, and is provided free-of charge.
  • Travel insurance with repatriation is essential.  
  • Volunteers pay for their own airfare to the country of destination
  • Teams are usually met at the airport and are escorted to their accommodation near the host hospital.
  • Teams pay for their own low-cost accommodation, usually in a local hotel, the cost of which is usually about $40 per night
  • Teams may be required to bring their own anaesthetic, gloves, gowns, drapes, analgesics and antibiotics, and sutures. Mosquito net mesh (LDPE mesh) is provided by Hernia International.
  • Green or blue scrubs are required for the operating room
  • local mobile phone is recommended, and can be coordinated through your hosts
  • Customs clearance of medical items and drugs, is required. Mark them clearly with a Red Cross and “Hernia International”, or place small items in your hold baggage.
  • Power outages sometimes affect lighting and cauterization equipment. Bring a simple headlamp with you.
